The verse reframes common inner afflictions as ethical and cognitive failures: delusion is confusion about dharma, pride is egoic self-conceit, laziness is neglect of dharmic action, and grief ultimately stems from ignorance. The remedy implied is clearer discernment of dharma, humility, disciplined action, and knowledge.
In the Vana Parva’s reflective discourse, Yudhiṣṭhira articulates definitions of key moral-psychological states, analyzing how inner dispositions (moha, māna, ālasya, śoka) relate to dharma and right living.
