Sūrya’s Counsel to Karṇa on Indra’s Intended Request
Kuṇḍala–Kavaca Discourse
तत्रानशनसंकल्पं कृत्वा5डसीना वयं तदा । ततः कथान्ते गृध्रस्य जटायोरभवत् कथा,“अन्तमें अनशन करके प्राण त्याग देनेका संकल्प लेकर हम सब लोग वहाँ बैठ गये। फिर आपसमें बातचीत होने लगी और बीचमें जटायुका प्रसंग छिड़ गया
tatrānaśana-saṅkalpaṁ kṛtvā āsīnā vayaṁ tadā | tataḥ kathānte gṛdhrasya jaṭāyor abhavat kathā ||
その場で我らは皆、アナーシャナ――死に至るまでの断食――を行うと決意して座した。やがて語らいが進むにつれ、話のさなかに禿鷲ジャターユ(Jatāyu)のことが持ち出され、その物語が立ち現れた。
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse highlights the gravity of saṅkalpa (solemn resolve) and the ethical weight of vows such as anaśana, while also showing how exemplary figures (like Jatāyu) are recalled in discourse to illuminate dharma through remembered deeds.
Mārkaṇḍeya narrates that they sat down after deciding on a fast unto death; during their ensuing conversation, the subject naturally shifts and the episode of Jatāyu is introduced as a relevant story within the larger narration.
