वैशम्पायन उवाच
A person’s deep-seated moral tendencies (anuśaya) shape the state of mind at death and condition the nature of the next birth; habitual inclination toward the good leads to an auspicious, welfare-oriented disposition in the next arising.
Vaiśampāyana delivers a doctrinal reflection within the Vana Parva’s discourse context, explaining how time/death (kāla) operates according to dharma so that a person’s ingrained orientation toward good manifests again as a wholesome mentality after death.
