The verse highlights the moral function of remembrance: a sage, seeing the Pāṇḍavas’ distress, recalls Rāma as a prior paradigm of dharma under trial. The implied teaching is that present suffering can be interpreted and endured through remembered exemplars of righteous conduct.
Mārkaṇḍeya observes Draupadī and the leading Pāṇḍavas among ascetics. He mentally remembers Rāma and smiles, signaling that he is about to connect their situation with an instructive precedent (a dharmic narrative) for counsel and consolation.
