Āraṇyaka-parva, Adhyāya 1 — The Pandavas’ Exit from Gajasāhvaya and the Citizens’ Lament
etaddhi mama kāryāṇāṁ paramaṁ hṛdi saṁsthitam | kṛtā tena tu tuṣṭir me satkāraś ca bhaviṣyati ||
The verse highlights a dharmic priority: among many obligations, one may stand as the highest inner commitment. Completing that duty brings not only personal contentment (tuṣṭi) but also social-moral recognition (satkāra), showing how inner resolve and public honour can align when the act is righteous.
Yudhiṣṭhira is addressing another person (implied by the second-person sense in the Hindi gloss) and identifies a particular requested action as his foremost concern. He states that if the listener carries it out, he will feel deep satisfaction and his honour/respect will be affirmed.
