प्रामथ्नाद्धास्तिनपुरं वातो दक्षिणपश्चिम: । आरुजन् गणशो वृक्षान् परुषो5शनिनि:स्वन:
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: prāmathnād dhāstinapuraṃ vāto dakṣiṇa-paścimaḥ | ārujan gaṇaśo vṛkṣān paruṣo 'śaniniḥsvanaḥ ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。「南西より荒き風が起こり、ハスティナープラをかき乱し始めた。木々を群れごとに折り、根こそぎ引き抜いて倒し、雷霆の墜つるがごとき凄烈な轟きが起こった――かくのごとき凶兆がハスティナープラの周辺に相次いでいた。」
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the Mahābhārata motif that moral and political disorder (adharma) is mirrored by disturbances in nature. Such portents function as warnings: when leaders ignore counsel and righteousness, the world itself seems to signal impending calamity.
As events move toward the great conflict, ominous signs appear around Hastināpura. A violent south-west wind shakes the city, breaks trees in groups, and produces a thunderbolt-like roar—an atmospheric portent foreshadowing turmoil for the Kuru realm.
