Omens and Reception During Keśava’s Departure

भगवान्‌ जनार्दनने सबसे पहले प्रातः:काल ऋषियोंके मुखसे मंगलपाठ सुननेवाले देवराज इन्द्रकी भाँति विश्वस्त ब्राह्मणोंके मुखसे परम मधुर मंगलकारक पुण्याहवाचन सुनते हुए स्नान किया। फिर उन्होंने पवित्र तथा वस्त्राभूषणोंसे अलंकृत हो स्वन्ध्यावन्दन

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | bhagavān janārdanaḥ prātaḥkāle viśvastabrāhmaṇānāṃ mukhebhyaḥ paramamadhuraṃ maṅgalakārakaṃ puṇyāhavācanaṃ śṛṇvan snānaṃ cakāra | tataḥ pavitraḥ vastrābhūṣaṇair alaṅkṛtaḥ svasaṃdhyāvandanaṃ sūryopasthānam agnihotrādīni ca pūrvāhṇikṛtyāni samāpya | vṛṣabhapṛṣṭhaṃ spṛṣṭvā brāhmaṇān namaskṛtya agniṃ parikramya purataḥ prastutānāṃ kalyāṇakārakavastūnāṃ darśanaṃ cakāra | tadanantaraṃ pāṇḍunandana-yudhiṣṭhirasya vacanāni vicārya janārdanaḥ svopaviṣṭaṃ śiniputraṃ sātyakiṃ praty uvāca— | rathāropyatāṃ śaṅkhaś cakraṃ ca gadayā saha | upāsaṅgāś ca śaktyaś ca sarvapraharaṇāni ca ||

ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。夜明けの頃、ジャナールダナは——まず仙人たちの口から吉祥の誦句を聴く天帝インドラのごとく——信頼すべきブラーフマナたちの口から、甘美にして吉祥、しかも浄化をもたらすプニヤーハ(puṇyāha)の祝詞を聴きながら沐浴した。ついで清浄となり、清らかな衣と装身具で身を整え、サンドヒヤーの礼拝、太陽への奉敬、アグニホートラ(agnihotra)など午前の諸儀礼を成し遂げた。その後、吉兆として雄牛の背に触れ、ブラーフマナに礼をし、聖火を右繞して、前に供えられた吉祥の品々を拝した。かくてパーンドゥの子ユディシュティラの言葉を思案し、ジャナールダナは傍らに座すシニの子サーティヤキにこう告げた。「戦車に法螺貝、円盤、棍棒を載せよ。さらに矢筒、槍(śakti)、そしてあらゆる武器をことごとく備えよ。」
