Udyoga Parva, Chapter 81: Krishna Sets Out as Envoy
viditaṁ te mahābāho dharmajña madhusūdana | yathā nikṛtim āsthāya bhraṁśitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sukhāt ||
The verse frames the Pāṇḍavas’ suffering as the result of nikṛti (deceit), implicitly contrasting such conduct with dharma. It reminds the listener that ethical judgment in political conflict hinges on whether actions are rooted in righteousness or in fraud.
Vaiśampāyana addresses Kṛṣṇa (Madhusūdana), stating that Kṛṣṇa already knows the background: the Pāṇḍavas were deprived of their rightful happiness through treachery—setting the stage for the diplomatic and moral tensions of the Udyoga Parva.
