Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 30: Sañjaya’s Departure and Yudhiṣṭhira’s Commission of Greetings
अभिवाद्य च वक्तव्यस्ततो5स्माकं पितामह: । भवता शन््तनोर्वशो निमग्न: पुनरुद्धृत:
abhivādya ca vaktavyas tato 'smākaṁ pitāmahaḥ | bhavatā śāntanor vaṁśo nimagnaḥ punar uddhṛtaḥ ||
敬意をもって礼拝したのち、われらの大祖父に申し上げよ。こう告げるのだ――「祖父上! 聖王シャーンタヌ(Śāntanu)の家系が衰亡に沈みかけたとき、あなたはそれを救い上げ、再び立て直されました。いま一度、ご自身の叡智で熟慮され、すべての御孫たちが互いに慈しみ合い、ともに生きられるようにお取り計らいください。」
युधिछिर उवाच
Respectful speech and moral persuasion should be used to avert conflict: Yudhiṣṭhira urges honoring elders and appealing to Bhīṣma’s past merit and responsibility to restore harmony among the grandsons, prioritizing familial concord over escalation.
In the pre-war negotiations of the Udyoga Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira instructs a messenger to salute Bhīṣma and remind him that he once saved Śāntanu’s lineage; he is now asked to employ his wisdom again to bring the Kuru cousins to live in mutual affection.
