Karma, Varṇa-Dharma, and the Ethics of Governance
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | anujñātaḥ sañjaya svasti gaccha na naḥ smarasy apriyaṃ jātu vidvan viditaś ca tvaṃ te ca vayaṃ ca sarve śuddhātmānaṃ madhyagataṃ sabhāstham |
Even amid political conflict, a messenger who bears no malice and maintains impartiality is to be honored. Ethical communication rests on goodwill (not wishing harm), purity of intention, and neutrality in public deliberation.
After hearing Sañjaya, Yudhiṣṭhira formally grants him leave to depart with blessings for safety. He acknowledges Sañjaya’s consistent goodwill and notes that both sides—Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas—recognize him as a pure-minded, neutral figure in the royal assembly.
