Bhīṣma’s Recollection of the Duel: Charioteer’s Fall, Brahmin Protection, and Portents after Rāma’s Collapse
ऑपन-माज बछ। ्-ज:डि चतुरशीरत्याधेकशततमो< ध्याय: भीष्म तथा परशुरामजीका एक-दूसरेपर शक्ति और ब्रह्मास्त्रका प्रयोग भीष्म उवाच ततो रात्रौ व्यतीतायां प्रतिबुद्धो5स्मि भारत । ततः संचिन्त्य वै स्वप्रमवापं हर्षमुत्तमम्
bhīṣma uvāca | tato rātrau vyatītāyāṃ pratibuddho 'smi bhārata | tataḥ saṃcintya vai svapnam avāpaṃ harṣam uttamam ||
ビーシュマは言った。「バーラタよ、夜が明けて我が眠りが覚めたとき、その夢のことを思い巡らせて、私はこの上ない歓喜を得た。」
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights the moral-psychological role of reflection: an inner experience (a dream) can strengthen resolve and clarity before decisive action, suggesting that one should thoughtfully interpret signs and one’s own mind rather than act impulsively.
Bhishma reports that after the night passed he awoke and, remembering and contemplating a dream, felt great joy—setting the emotional and narrative tone for what he is about to recount next.
