Bhīṣma’s Account of the Strategic Engagement with Rāma Jāmadagnya
yadi śakyo mayā jetuṃ jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān | daivatāni prasannāni darśayantu niśāṃ mama ||
Even a great warrior like Bhīṣma seeks divine confirmation before a momentous conflict, showing that human effort (puruṣakāra) is ideally aligned with higher order (daiva) and approached with humility rather than arrogance.
Bhīṣma, facing the prospect of combat with Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma), asks for an omen: if victory is truly possible for him, the pleased gods should appear to him at night as a sign.
