Bhishma’s Account of Parashurama’s Challenge and the March to Kurukshetra
एवं तदभवद् युद्ध तदा भरतसत्तम । संध्याकाले व्यतीते तु व्यपायात् स च मे गुरु:,भरतभूषण! इस प्रकार वह युद्ध चलता रहा। संध्याकाल बीतनेपर मेरे गुरु रणभूमिसे हट गये
evaṃ tad abhavad yuddhaṃ tadā bharatasattama | sandhyākāle vyatīte tu vyapāyāt sa ca me guruḥ ||
ビーシュマは語った。「かくしてその時、戦いは続いたのだ、バラタ族の最勝者よ。だが夕暮れが過ぎ去ると、我が師もまた戦場から退いた、バラタの誉れよ。」
भीष्म उवाच
Even in warfare, conduct is bounded by dharmic limits—here signaled by the passing of sandhyā (evening junction)—and the relationship to one’s guru remains ethically weighty; the narrative underscores restraint, order, and reverence amid conflict.
Bhishma recounts that the fighting continued for a time, but once evening had passed, his guru (preceptor) withdrew from the battlefield, bringing that phase of combat to a close.
