Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
tatra tvāṁ nihataṁ mātā mayā śaraśatācitam | jāhnavī paśyatāṁ bhīṣma gṛdhrakaṅkabalāśanam ||
The verse underscores the uncompromising warrior ethic (kṣatriya-dharma) and the grim realism of battle: even the noblest are subject to death and dishonor in war, and personal bonds (a mother witnessing her son’s fate) do not soften the consequences of martial vows and enmity.
Bhīṣma speaks in a fierce, prophetic tone about the coming Kurukṣetra conflict, declaring that the opponent will be slain by him and left riddled with arrows, so that even Gaṅgā (Jāhnavī), the mother, would witness the corpse becoming prey for carrion birds.
