Educational Q&A

A leader who sacrifices personal comfort to pursue the kingdom’s prosperity strengthens the morale and trust of his counsellors; disciplined effort for public welfare inspires the governing circle.

Vāyu is speaking a maxim on conduct: he describes how renouncing private pleasures in order to seek prosperity has an immediate political effect—ministers become pleased and encouraged, seeing the ruler’s seriousness and commitment.
