Adhyāya 12: Devas’ Petition to Nahūṣa; Bṛhaspati on Śaraṇāgata-Dharma; Indrāṇī’s Strategic Delay
देवा ऊचु इन्द्राणीमानयिष्यामो यथेच्छसि दिवस्पते । जहि क्रोधमिमं वीर प्रीतो भव सुरेश्वर
devā ūcuḥ—indrāṇīm ānayiṣyāmo yathecchasi divaspate | jahi krodham imaṃ vīra prīto bhava sureśvara ||
神々は言った。「天界の主よ、望みのままにインドラーニーを連れて来て、あなたに仕えさせよう。勇者にして神々の王よ、この怒りを捨て、満ち足りたまえ。」
शल्य उवाच
Even legitimate power is undermined by uncontrolled anger; the ethical ideal is to relinquish wrath and restore harmony through restraint and reconciliation.
The gods address Indra, promising to bring Indrāṇī to him as he desires, and urge him to give up his anger and become pleased—an attempt to pacify a divine ruler and reestablish order.
