The verse highlights ethical discernment and humility: even a powerful deity like Indra recognizes limits of authority and defers a supreme gift (such as exceptional longevity) to Viṣṇu, indicating respect for rightful jurisdiction and the proper channel for granting the highest boons.
Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates that Indra, after considering Garuḍa’s extraordinary prowess, speaks to Viṣṇu and requests that Viṣṇu himself grant the boon to Garuḍa—implying that the matter is best handled by Viṣṇu’s superior divine authority.
