Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 103: Garuḍa’s Protest, Viṣṇu’s Demonstration, and Counsel Toward Śama
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca—janamejaya! tataḥ paścāt bhagavān viṣṇur lokeśvaram indram uvāca—“devarāja! tvaṃ sumukhaṃ amṛtaṃ dehi, enaṃ ca devatulyam kuru. mātali-nārada-sumukhāś caiva, vāsava, bhavataḥ kāmāt yathā-īpsitaṃ kāmaṃ labhantām; amṛtadānena teṣāṃ manorathaḥ paripūryatām.”
Divine power is portrayed as a duty to confer protection and rightful fulfillment: Indra is instructed to give amṛta and elevate Sumukha, showing that authority should be used to uphold welfare and complete legitimate aims rather than to withhold out of jealousy or fear.
Vaiśaṃpāyana narrates that Viṣṇu addresses Indra and commands him to grant amṛta to Sumukha and to satisfy the wishes of Mātali, Nārada, and Sumukha, so that their desired objectives are accomplished through Indra’s gift.
