Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 103: Garuḍa’s Protest, Viṣṇu’s Demonstration, and Counsel Toward Śama
dhruvaṃ tathā tad bhavitā jānīmas tasyātha niścayam | tena harṣaḥ praṇaṣṭo me suparṇavacanena vai ||
The verse highlights how a powerful being’s firm resolve (niścaya) can create unavoidable fear and sorrow in others; it also underscores the ethical weight of speech—words can decisively alter another’s inner state, destroying harṣa (joy) and replacing it with anxiety.
Āryaka states that Garuḍa’s declared intention is certain to be fulfilled; knowing the inevitability of Garuḍa’s resolve, Āryaka says his happiness has vanished because of Garuḍa’s words.
