viprebhyaḥ saṃskṛtaṃ samyag dadyāt saṃyatamānasaḥ | śalyaparvaṇi rājendra modakaiḥ saguḍaudanaiḥ ||
The verse teaches dāna and hospitality guided by self-restraint: offerings should be properly prepared, given respectfully to brāhmaṇas, and aligned with what is fitting and pleasing, emphasizing inner discipline (saṃyatamānasaḥ) along with outward generosity.
Vaiśampāyana continues a prescriptive description of meritorious conduct, listing appropriate acts of giving across contexts (here referencing the Śalya-parvan), specifying exemplary foods—modakas and jaggery-rice—as suitable offerings to brāhmaṇas when performed with a controlled mind.
