Indra and Dharma’s Consolation; Celestial Gaṅgā Purification
śubhānām aśubhānāṁ ca dvau rāśī puruṣarṣabha | yaḥ pūrvaṁ sukṛtaṁ bhuṅkte paścān nirayam eva saḥ ||
A person carries accumulated merit and demerit; if one’s merit is enjoyed first, the remaining demerit must still be undergone, leading to suffering (symbolized as ‘hell’). The verse stresses moral causality and the inevitability of karmic fruition.
Vaiśampāyana is explaining a principle of karmic accounting in the Svargārohaṇa context, clarifying how beings experience the results of good and bad deeds in sequence—enjoyment of merit followed by the expiation of remaining sin.
