Gandhārī’s Confrontation and Consolation of Yudhiṣṭhira

tayā te samanujñātā mātaraṃ vīramātaram

Educational Q&A

Even amid the devastation of war, proper conduct is maintained through seeking and granting permission, honoring elders, and approaching those in grief with due respect—an expression of dharma in social relations.

A group is given formal leave by a woman (contextually, a senior or authoritative figure), and with that permission they proceed to the mother described as a ‘hero’s mother,’ indicating a respectful visit or approach in the mourning setting of the Strī Parva.
