Kṣātra-dharma in Campaign and Battle: Protection, Purification, and the Ideal Warrior’s End (क्षात्रधर्मः—अभियानयुद्धे रक्षणदानशुद्धिः)
पुरुषाणां समानानां दृश्यते महदन्तरम् | संग्रामेडनीकवेलायामुत्क्रुष्टेडशभिपतन्त्युत,सभी पुरुष देखनेमें समान होते हैं; परंतु युद्धस्थलमें जब सैनिकोंके परस्पर भिड़नेका समय आता है और चारों ओरसे वीरोंकी पुकार होने लगती है, उस समय उनमें महान् अन्तर दृष्टिगोचर होता है। एक श्रेणीके वीर तो निर्भय होकर शत्रुओंपर टूट पड़ते हैं और दूसरी श्रेणीके लोग प्राण बचानेकी चिन्तामें पड़ जाते हैं
bhīṣma uvāca | puruṣāṇāṁ samānānāṁ dṛśyate mahad antaram | saṅgrāme ’nīkavelāyām utkr̥ṣṭe daśabhiḥ patanty uta |
ビーシュマは言った。「人は見た目には同じように見えるが、その間には大きな隔たりがある。戦場において、両軍の陣がぶつかり合う刻が来て、四方から勇士の鬨の声が湧き上がるとき、真の器量が露わになる。ある者は恐れなく敵へ突進し、ある者はただ己が命を守ることに心を奪われる。」

Outward sameness does not indicate inner strength. Crisis—especially the terror and confusion of battle—reveals a person’s real disposition: steadfast courage versus self-preserving fear. The verse highlights ethical discernment: judging character by conduct under pressure rather than by appearance.
Bhishma is instructing by observation from warfare: when armies close in and the battle-cries rise, the ranks split in spirit—some warriors charge the enemy without fear, while others hesitate and focus on protecting their lives. The battlefield becomes a proving ground where inner qualities become visible.
