Varṇa, Sovereignty, and Abhaya-dāna

A ruler who ensures the safety and stability of the realm becomes a participant in the moral fruits of his subjects’ dharmic life; governance is ethically consequential, and protection enables righteousness.
In the Shanti Parva’s discussion of rajadharma, Aila states a principle of shared moral outcome: when people live righteously under a king’s effective protection, the king is said to receive a quarter share of that dharma’s merit.
