भीष्म उवाच विस्तीर्णैषा कथा राजन् श्रुता मे पितृसंनिधौ । यैषा तव हि वक्तव्या कथासारो हि सा मता,भीष्मजी कहते हैं--राजन! यह कथा बहुत विस्तृत है। इसे मैंने अपने पिताजीके निकट सुना था। इस समय जो कथा तुम्हारे सामने कहनी है, वह सम्पूर्ण कथाओंकी सारभूत मानी गयी है
bhīṣma uvāca vistīrṇaiṣā kathā rājan śrutā me pitṛsaṃnidhau | yaiṣā tava hi vaktavyā kathāsāro hi sā matā ||
ビーシュマは言った。「王よ、この物語はきわめて広大である。私は父の御前でそれを聞いた。だが今、汝に語るべき筋は、あらゆる物語の精髄と見なされるもの——無益な冗長を避け、法（ダルマ）の趣旨を伝えるために凝縮された語りである。」
