Moral purity and greatness are portrayed as qualities harmonizing with the fundamental purity of the elements; true nobility is ‘stainless’—free from inner corruption—like fire, wind, earth, water, and space.
Bhīṣma, speaking in the Śānti Parva’s instructional setting, offers a benedictive assurance/prophecy to an addressed listener that their son will be exceptionally pure and great, using the five elements as a standard of natural purity.
