Agency for producing qualities and actions belongs to the mind-intellect (sattva/buddhi), while the Self (kṣetrajña) is the detached witness. Ethical clarity arises from not misattributing the mind’s movements to the Self, cultivating discernment and non-attachment.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and liberation, Bhishma explains a Sāṅkhya-like distinction between the witnessing Self and the quality-driven inner instrument, describing their enduring association as the basis for embodied experience.
