Adhyāya 283: Varṇa-vṛtti, Nyāya-ārjana, and the Decline-and-Restoration of Dharma (वर्णवृत्तिः न्यायार्जनं च)

Educational Q&A

Ritual action (yajña) is not self-justifying; when performed with arrogance, exclusion, or disrespect toward the divine and the righteous, it loses its sanctity and can invite downfall. Dharma requires inner propriety and reverence, not merely external ceremony.

Dakṣa describes the sudden onslaught of Rudra’s fearsome attendants. In large bands, they fill the sky with piercing cries and charge swiftly with the intent to wreck Dakṣa’s sacrificial proceedings.
