पज्चानां भूतसंघानां संततिं मुनयो विदु: । मनो नवममेषां तु बुद्धिस्तु दशमी स्मृता

pañcānāṃ bhūtasaṅghānāṃ santatiṃ munayo viduḥ | mano navamam eṣāṃ tu buddhis tu daśamī smṛtā ||

ヴィヤーサは言った。賢者たちは、五大(地・水・火・風・空)の総和から、さらに諸原理の連なりが生ずると知っている。そのうち、意(マナス)は第九とされ、知性(ブッディ)は第十として記憶される。この教えでは、知覚と行為を駆動する内なる器官が別個の実在として数えられ、無明と衝動が、識別するブッディに導かれぬかぎり、行いを形づくり得ることが示される。
