Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature
loke āturajanān virāviṇaḥ tattad eva bahu paśya śocataḥ | tatra paśya kuśalān aśocato ye vidus tad ubhayaṃ padaṃ satām ||
Bhishma contrasts ordinary people who grieve intensely over loss with the discerning who, knowing the higher aims available to the virtuous, remain free from sorrow; one should reflect on both and adopt the truly beneficial path.
In Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma is advising the listener to observe human reactions to loss and to learn from the composure of the wise, using this comparison to guide one’s own ethical and spiritual choice.
