Adhyāya 178 — The courses of prāṇa-vāyu and the regulation of the bodily fire
na yuṣmāsv iha me prītiḥ kāmalo bhānusāriṣu | tasmād utsṛjya kāmān vai sattvam evāśrayāmy aham ||
The verse teaches ethical self-discipline: one should abandon the pull of desire (kāma) and greed (lobha) and deliberately cultivate sattva—clarity, restraint, and inner steadiness—as the basis for right living (dharma).
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on conduct and inner qualities, Bhīṣma declares a turning away from forces that chase cravings and outward allure, and states his resolve to rely on sattva alone—signaling a moral and spiritual reorientation.
