Mutual Causality of Ignorance and Greed
अपि चाप्सु निमज्जेत जपेस्त्रिरघमर्षणम् । यथाश्वमेधावभूथस्तथा तन्मनुरब्रवीत्
api cāpsu nimajjet japet trir-aghamarṣaṇam | yathāśvamedhāvabhūthaḥ tathā tan manur abravīt, yadi |
シャウナカは言った。「人が水に身を沈め、アガマルシャナ(Aghamarṣaṇa)を三度誦するなら、アシュヴァメーダ(Aśvamedha)祭の結びの浄浴(アヴァブリタ・スナーナ avabhṛtha-snāna)と等しい功徳を得る、とマヌ(Manu)は宣言した。」
शौनक उवाच
That prescribed purification—immersing in water while reciting the Aghamarṣaṇa three times—can yield merit equivalent to the avabhṛtha bath of an Aśvamedha, highlighting the power of disciplined, sincere practice and authoritative dharma-teaching (Manu).
Śaunaka cites Manu’s statement while discussing dharma-related observances: he presents a specific purificatory act (water-immersion with Aghamarṣaṇa japa) and equates its फल (spiritual merit) with the famed concluding bath of a great Vedic sacrifice.
