Gadāyuddhe Kṛṣṇopadeśaḥ (Kṛṣṇa’s Counsel in the Mace-Duel) — Śalya-parva 57
nākampata mahārāja tadadbhutam ivābhavat |
The verse highlights steadfastness under injury: a warrior’s composure and resolve should not collapse under pain or provocation. Such self-mastery is presented as ‘adbhuta’—remarkable—because it reflects disciplined courage rather than impulsive reaction.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that despite being struck by Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son in the battle, Bhīma did not even tremble. Sañjaya frames Bhīma’s unshaken stance as something extraordinary to witness amid the violence of the war.
