Gadāyuddhe Kṛṣṇopadeśaḥ (Kṛṣṇa’s Counsel in the Mace-Duel) — Śalya-parva 57
उपन्यस्तमपन्यस्तं गदायुद्धविशारदौ । एवं तौ विचरन्तौ तु परस्परमविध्यताम्
upanyastam apanyastaṁ gadāyuddhaviśāradau | evaṁ tau vicarantau tu parasparam avidhyatām ||
サンジャヤは言った。二人はともに棍棒戦の術に通じた達人で、構えを絶えず移し—ある時は守りを固め、ある時はそれを引き—そうして動きながら、互いに幾度も打ち合った。この場面が示すのは憤怒ではなく、規律ある武の技である。戦の暴威のただ中で、各々が節度ある技、執念、そして制御によって勝機を求めていた。
संजय उवाच
Even in a brutal duel, the text highlights controlled technique and disciplined conduct: victory is pursued through trained skill, alertness, and strategic movement rather than uncontrolled fury—an aspect of kṣatriya-dharma where prowess is joined to restraint.
Sañjaya describes two expert mace-fighters maneuvering with alternating guards and positions, circling and engaging repeatedly, mutually landing blows as they test each other’s defenses.
