एतदाचक्ष्व मे ब्रह्मन्‌ श्रोतव्यं यदि मन्यसे । जनमेजयने पूछा--ब्रह्मन! उदपान तीर्थ कैसे हुआ? वे महातपस्वी त्रितमुनि उसमें कैसे गिर पड़े और द्विजश्रेष्ठ उनके दोनों भाइयोंने उन्हें क्यों वहीं छोड़ दिया था? क्या कारण था

etad ācakṣva me brahman śrotavyaṃ yadi manyase | janamejaya uvāca |

ジャナメージャヤは言った。「婆羅門よ、もし聞くに値するとお考えなら、これを私に語ってください。あの井戸はいかにして聖なる渡り場(ティールタ tīrtha)となったのですか。大苦行者トリタ(Trita)はいかにしてそこへ落ち、また二生者(dvija)の中でも最もすぐれた彼の二人の兄弟は、なぜ彼をそこで見捨てたのですか。どのような理由で、彼らは井戸の中に彼を置き去りにして家へ帰ったのですか。さらに、そこに住みながら、彼はどのように祭祀(yajña)を行い、ソーマ(Soma)を飲んだのですか。もしこの因縁が私の聞くに足るものなら、どうか詳しくお話しください。」
