Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Saṃjaya Dialogue: Duryodhana’s Entry into the Lake
kṣubdhasāgarasaṅkāśāḥ kṣubhitāḥ sarvato 'bhavan | rājendra! tatra dhāvā-kāle taiḥ sainikaiḥ bhayaṅkaraḥ kolāhalo mahān akriyata | te vikṣubdha-samudra-samāḥ kṣobhena pūrṇāḥ sarvato vyāptā babhūvuḥ |
The verse highlights how war amplifies collective agitation: when many minds are seized by kṣobha (turmoil), the result is overwhelming noise and force, like an ocean in storm—suggesting the ethical danger of losing restraint and discernment amid mass violence.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the troops, rushing to attack, created a terrifying clamor and spread in all directions, compared to the churning, surging expanse of a disturbed sea.
