प्रशंसन्तो<र्जुनं केचित् केचित् कर्ण महारथा: । व्यद्रवन्त दिशो भीता: कुरव: कुरुसत्तम,कुरुश्रेष्ठ! कौरव-महारथियोंमेंसे कुछ लोग अर्जुनकी प्रशंसा करते थे और कुछ कर्णकी। वे सब-के-सब भयभीत होकर चारों दिशाओंमें भाग खड़े हुए
sañjaya uvāca | praśaṃsanto 'rjunaṃ kecit kecit karṇa-mahārathāḥ | vyadravanta diśo bhītāḥ kuravaḥ kuru-sattama kuru-śreṣṭha ||
サञ्जयは言った。「クル族の戦士のうち、ある者はアルジュナを讃え、またある者は大車戦士カルナを讃えた。だがクル族は皆、恐怖にとらわれ、四方へ散って逃げ去った—おおクル族の最勝者よ、クルの血統の最上者よ。勇士同士の激突のただ中では、派閥の喝采は戦の道義と心の現実の前に消えうせる。恐れは名高き軍勢の結束すら溶かし得るのだ。」
