The verse highlights a practical ethical lesson of warfare and leadership: strength is not only numerical but also psychological and organizational. When fear or confusion breaks discipline, even a righteous or powerful side can fragment; steadiness, cohesion, and clear command are essential to uphold one’s duty (svadharma) in crisis.
Sañjaya describes the battlefield moment when the Pāṇḍava forces advance toward Karṇa. On encountering him, their ranks are split and dispersed, compared to a great current of water that hits a high mountain and divides into multiple streams.
