Yudhiṣṭhira’s Reproach to Dhanaṃjaya
abhavat tumulaḥ śabdo yodhānāṁ tatra bhārata
The verse underscores the moral and psychological weight of war: collective violence generates an overpowering clamor that signals heightened aggression and confusion, reminding the listener that battle is not merely strategy but a human storm with grave ethical consequences.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, at that moment on the battlefield, the fighters’ combined cries and noises swelled into a great tumult—an atmospheric marker of intense engagement and escalating combat.
