Jayadratha-rakṣā: Conch Signals and Encirclement of Arjuna
Chapter 79
ye cānye 'pi kule santi puruṣā no varānane | sarve te tāṁ gatiṁ yāntu hy abhimanyor yaśasvinaḥ ||
The verse elevates a warrior’s dharma-fulfilled death as an honored ‘gati’ (destiny/attainment). It reflects the ethical ideal that steadfast courage and duty in a righteous cause can transform death into a revered spiritual and moral culmination.
Sañjaya reports a sentiment expressed to a woman addressed as ‘varānane’: the family wishes that all men of their lineage may attain the same exalted end as Abhimanyu. The line functions as praise of Abhimanyu’s heroic fate and as a consolatory framing amid the calamities of the war.
