Educational Q&A

The verse frames ethical epic narration: a king’s question about martial prowess is answered with a complete, orderly account. It highlights responsibility in speech—reporting events faithfully—and situates valor (vikrama) within the wider scrutiny of dharma in war.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks about Jayadratha’s prowess. Sañjaya begins his report, promising to narrate in full how Jayadratha, the ruler of Sindhu, fought against the Pāṇḍavas—introducing the episode of Jayadratha’s battle and actions in this chapter.
