Saṃśaptakas in Candrārdha-vyūha; Arjuna’s Devadatta and the Traigarta Rout
Chapter 17
arjuna uvāca | ayaṃ vai satyajid rājan adya tvāṃ rakṣitā yudhi | priyamāṇe ca pāñcālye nācāryaḥ kāmam āpsyati ||
The verse highlights battlefield dharma through responsible protection and strategic reassurance: a leader’s safety is entrusted to capable allies, and an opponent’s objective can be ethically countered by steadfast defense rather than reckless aggression.
Arjuna addresses a king on his side, assuring him that the Pāñcāla warrior Satyajit will guard him in the day’s fighting; as long as Satyajit holds the field, Droṇa will be unable to fulfill the particular aim he is pursuing in that phase of the battle.
