Duryodhana’s Visit to Bhīṣma’s Camp and the Command Appeal
tatra bhārata bhīṣmasya raṇe dṛṣṭvā parākramam | atyadbhutam apaśyāma śakrasyeva parākramam ||
The verse highlights the epic theme that extraordinary power and heroism can be morally complex in a dharma-conflicted war: valor is admirable and awe-inspiring, yet it also serves a destructive end, reminding the listener to distinguish personal excellence from the righteousness of outcomes.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that on the battlefield he and others witnessed Bhīṣma’s astonishing martial prowess, likening it to Indra’s might—an emphatic description of Bhīṣma’s dominance during the Kurukṣetra fighting.
