The passage highlights the ethical and psychological collapse that follows when a key warrior withdraws from duty: defeat, grief, and loss of resolve spread through the ranks. It underscores how responsibility in war is collective—one person’s refusal to fight can demoralize allies and intensify the sense of helplessness against an apparently ‘invincible’ opponent.
Sañjaya reports that because Karṇa has turned away from fighting, the Pāṇḍavas have gained the upper hand. In the presence of Droṇa, Bhīma has slain the speaker’s heroic brothers while he watched. Overwhelmed by the Pāṇḍavas—described as unconquerable even by the gods—he falls into doubt and asks how he can strike anyone in battle in such a condition.
