Chapter 49
देशकालावुभौ केचिन्नैतदस्तीति चापरे । जटाजिनधराश्रान्ये मुण्डा: केचिदसंवृता:
deśa-kālāv ubhau kecin naitad astīti cāpare | jaṭājinadharāḥ anye muṇḍāḥ kecid asaṃvṛtāḥ ||
ヴァーユは言った。「ある者は場所と時間の双方を、実在する支配的要因として認めるが、別の者はそれらに真の存在はないと宣言する。ある者は苦行者として結髪し鹿皮をまとい、ある者は頭を剃り、ある者は衣をまとわずにいる。」
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse highlights that people hold conflicting doctrines (e.g., whether time and place are real) and adopt varied ascetic appearances; it implies that truth and dharma are not guaranteed by sectarian claims or external symbols alone.
Vāyudeva is describing the variety of viewpoints and lifestyles found among seekers/ascetics—some affirming or denying the reality of deśa and kāla, and others distinguished by visible practices like matted hair with deerskin, shaved heads, or nudity.
