āgneyam vai lohitam ālabhantāṃ vaiśvadevaṃ bahurūpaṃ hi rājan nīlaṃ cokṣāṇaṃ medhyam apy ālabhantāṃ calacchiśraṃ sampradiṣṭaṃ dvijāgryāḥ

Educational Q&A

Ritual action should follow prescribed dharma: offerings are matched to deities (Agni with red-hued items; Viśvedevas with varied offerings), and gifts to Brāhmaṇas should be ritually appropriate (medhya) and given in the proper manner (including the formal act of touching/acceptance).

Vyāsa instructs the king on specific sacrificial arrangements connected with the Aśvamedha context—what kinds of offerings to present to particular deities and how an eligible bull is to be formally given and accepted by leading Brāhmaṇas.
