अध्याय ५६ — च्यवन–कुशिकसंवादः
Cyavana–Kuśika Dialogue on Lineage, Conflict, and Transmission
यदा तौ निर्विकारौ तु लक्षयामास भार्गव: । तत उत्थाय सहसा स्नानशालां विवेश ह
yadā tau nirvikārau tu lakṣayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ | tata utthāya sahasā snānaśālāṃ viveśa ha sa muniḥ punar evātha nṛpateḥ paśyatas tadā | nāsūyāṃ cakratus tau ca dampatī bharatarṣabha ||
ビーシュマは言った。「バールガヴァの聖仙は、王と王妃が少しも動揺せず平然としているのを見て、にわかに立ち上がり、沐浴の間へ入った。すると王が見守るその眼前で、その牟尼は再び姿を消した。王は沐浴のために王者にふさわしい一切の用具をあらかじめ整えていたが、聖仙はそれらをことごとく顧みず、何一つ用いなかった。それでも夫婦は彼を咎める目で見ることはなかった、バラタ族の雄牛よ。」
भीष्म उवाच
True dharma is shown by steadiness and freedom from asūyā (envy/spite/fault-finding) even when one’s hospitality or efforts appear to be rejected. The couple’s restraint demonstrates ethical maturity: they do not judge the sage’s conduct, but maintain reverence and composure.
A Bhargava sage observes that the husband and wife remain unperturbed. He abruptly enters the bathing chamber and, despite the king’s prepared royal bathing arrangements, he ignores them and vanishes again in the king’s sight. The couple still does not harbor resentment or criticism toward him.
