Anuśāsana-parva 17

तेजसामपि यत्‌ तेजस्तपसामपि यत्‌ तपः । शान्तानामपि य: शान्तो द्युतीनामपि या झ्युति:

tejasām api yat tejas tapasām api yat tapaḥ | śāntānām api yaḥ śānto dyutīnām api yā dyutiḥ ||

ヴァーユは言った。「彼は、輝くものの中にあってなお“輝き”そのものであり、苦行者の中にあってなお“苦行(タパス)”そのものである。静謐なる者の中にあってなお最も静謐であり、光り輝くすべての中にあってなお“光輝”そのものである——あらゆる卓越のうちに、彼こそ無上の卓越である。諸世界は彼より生じ、彼に帰して融け去る。彼は一切衆生の自己(アートマン)である。いま聞け、人中の最勝者よ。量り知れぬ光威を具えた主シヴァの千八(1008)の御名を、我が口より宣べよう。これをただ聞くのみで、汝のあらゆる願いは成就するであろう。」

Educational Q&A

The verse presents Śiva as the supreme essence within every excellence—brilliance among the brilliant, austerity among ascetics, peace among the peaceful—framing him as the inner Self of all beings and the cosmic source into whom all returns. It also teaches the devotional efficacy of hearing his sacred names.

Vāyu begins a hymn-like introduction to the recitation of Śiva’s thousand-and-eight names, praising Śiva’s unsurpassed qualities and promising that mere hearing of the names grants fulfillment of desires to the listener addressed as “best of men.”
