Adhyāya 152 — Bhīṣma’s Authorization for Yudhiṣṭhira’s Return to the Capital (नगरप्रवेशानुज्ञा)
puṇyam etat tapaś caitat svargaś ca eṣa sanātanaḥ | yā nārī bhartṛparamā bhaved bhartṛvratā satī ||
The verse teaches that steadfast devotion to one’s spouse—expressed as continual concern for the husband’s welfare and faithful observance of the pativratā-dharma—is regarded as a powerful form of tapas (austerity) and a source of puṇya (merit), leading to enduring spiritual reward (svarga).
Śrī Maheśvara is speaking, praising the ethical and spiritual value of a virtuous wife’s conduct. The statement functions as instruction within Anuśāsana Parva’s broader didactic discourse on dharma, especially duties and ideals related to household life and women’s vows.
