Adhyāya 152 — Bhīṣma’s Authorization for Yudhiṣṭhira’s Return to the Capital (नगरप्रवेशानुज्ञा)
जो सब प्रकारसे समर्थ होकर भी दूसरोंसे पूछता तथा उन्हें सम्मान देता है और जिसके मनमें कभी दुष्टता नहीं आती, वह मनुष्य निस्संदेह पण्डित कहलाता है ।।
jñāna-vijñāna-sampannān ūhāpohaviśāradān | pravaktūn pṛcchate yo 'nyān sa vai nāpadam ṛcchati ||
マヘーシュヴァラは言った。「十分に力がありながら、なお他者に問い、彼らを敬い、心に悪意を起こさせぬ者こそ、真に学者と呼ばれる。知識と体得の理解を備え、取捨を量ることに長け、疑いを晴らすために諸々の師に問う者は、災厄に陥らない。集会において、真に聡明な者は分別をもって語るが、驕り高ぶる者は別様に語り、その弱さと不安定さを露わにする。」
श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच
True learning is marked by humility and ethical intent: even a capable person should respectfully consult others, use discriminative reasoning (ūha–apoha) to remove doubt, and remain free from malice; such a person avoids adversity.
In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction-setting, Maheshvara describes the qualities of a genuine paṇḍita and contrasts wise speech in an assembly with the weak, self-revealing talk of the arrogant.
